Install Big Sur on a 2011 Mac using Open Core

STEP 1: Create the Big Sur installer

  1. Open the terminal and enter the following command: sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ BigSurInstaller.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/USB Make sure you have the Big Sur installer in the Applications folder and replace 'USB' with the exact name of your USB drive. You can find this name in the Disk Utility on your Mac.

STEP 2: Configure Open Core

  1. Copy the Open Core file to the Applications folder and run it.
  2. Select the option to install Open Core on an external USB and choose your Big Sur installer.
  3. Allow the installation to complete and restart your Mac. Now the installer is ready.

STEP 3: Start the Big Sur installation

  1. Connect the installation USB and boot your Mac by pressing the 'Option' key to access the boot menu.
  2. Select 'EFI Boot' and then choose the Big Sur installer.
  3. Follow the usual Big Sur installation process.

STEP 4: Patching with Open Core

  1. After the installation is complete, it's necessary to patch the hard drive where Big Sur was installed using Open Core.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Optionally, you can patch the root again from Open Core and restart.

STEP 5: Boot your Mac into Big Sur

  1. Start your Mac without the USB connected and press the 'Option' key to access EFI Boot.
  2. Select 'Big Sur' and press Enter.
  3. Done! Now you can enjoy macOS Big Sur on your 2011 Mac.

Additional Tip:

If you want your Mac to automatically start in Big Sur, follow these steps:

  1. Start your Mac by pressing the 'Option' key.
  2. In the menu where EFI Boot is displayed, press the 'Control' key and you'll see its icon change.
  3. Press Enter and repeat the same process to select Big Sur.
